Update 2nd December

From Laurence:

I hope you are enjoying the snow and are nice and warm.  Teaching hasbeen cancelled this morning and Julia and I have decided to postponned the teaching and tutorial sessions planned today to next Thursday.  This give you extra time to complete the sustainability appraisal and do more research to illustrate your proposed strategy for Sharrow.  My suggestions to use today free time constructively are as follows:

You could go back on site.  Doing a movement pattern survey during snowy weather is ideal as you can immediately identify the intensity of use of the different roads/streets and paths...

You can gather extra information on the site by visiting Sharrow Community Forum, Encounters website...etc

You can spend the extra time improving your GIS skills or have a go at using other software, e.g. illustrator, photoshop to explore ways of illustrating your survey and appraisal or strategies.  Do not forget to built a snow man, woman, animal etc.  last year there were some fantastic temporary sculptures in the open spaces in Sharrow.

For next week tutorial the survey and sustainability appraisal drawings will have to be finished and you will have to be more advanced with your strategies for Sharrow. Therefore I suggest you spend the extra time doing more research to identify  relevant case studies to illustrate what you are proposing to make Sharrow more sustianable in relation with your research topic of the first assignment.

All this should keep you busy today.  Next week we will meet at 9.30 in Floor F and after a general session on strategic proposals we will resume the tutorials in groups.  I am teaching on an other module on Thursday 16.12 but if it fits with your timetable I am thinking of having the review session on Tuesday 14.12.2010, when you seem to have no teaching.  We will then have to postpone the hand in to January.  I will check with Helen Morris the exact possible date and let you know next week.  All the papers submitted have been marked and moderated and I intended to give them back to you today but it will also have to be postponed to next week.

I hope I have not forgotten anything. Julia is going to post this message to the blog for future reference and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

Look out of your window,  the city landscape is amazing with all that snow, so quiet, no traffic, people walking, playing in the streets.  Fantastic opportunity to get inspired about changing the urban landscape to a more socially stimulating, playful environment... do not forget to feed the birds they need it...
